When specifying PAI for a precision application, agree on the condition in which dimensions will be checked. Grade, supplied form, moisture and processing state matter alongside the tolerance value. A measurement at material receipt does not necessarily describe its later condition inside the equipment.
Identify the PAI actually being offered
PAI means polyamide-imide. As manufacturer examples, Syensqo distinguishes Torlon 4203L, an unreinforced, lubricated and pigmented resin grade, from wear-oriented Torlon 4301. Those designations are not interchangeable and do not establish the performance of every stock shape. Consult the 4203L and 4301 product information.
For rod, plate or tube, also request the stock-shape producer’s designation, process and relevant product data. Ensinger describes PAI shapes made through different processes and notes moisture-related dimensional change. This illustrates why resin, stock shape and finished component need separate identification. This article does not confirm PomDepot supply of particular brands or grades.
Include moisture condition in the dimensional question
Syensqo and Ensinger describe water uptake and associated dimensional or property changes in PAI. “The diameter is within tolerance” therefore needs a reference: material state, measurement environment and intended service condition.
Before approving a substitution, agree how the material will be stored and evaluated. Where drying or conditioning is required, request the procedure and record applicable to the actual product. Do not transfer a time–temperature recipe from a different form, thickness or process. An initial measurement also does not demonstrate dimensional stability throughout component life.
Ask about post-cure without inventing a cycle
Syensqo links appropriate post-cure of Torlon PAI parts with chemical-resistance development. That supports asking for the applicable state and procedure; it does not justify applying an online curing cycle to any rod. The documented processing history must relate to the actual offered product.
Ask which treatments were performed, what condition the datasheet represents and what subsequent checks are required. If the document describes a resin specimen but the purchase concerns a commercial stock shape, retain that distinction. Neither the PAI family name nor a heating step alone approves a component for chemical service.
A purchase record with checkable conditions
| Field | Useful information |
|---|---|
| Material | Family, grade, stock-shape producer and required form |
| Geometry | Purchase dimensions and component drawing, identifying critical dimensions |
| Condition | Moisture/conditioning state and documented treatments |
| Service | Temperature, load, chemical exposure, duration and environmental changes |
| Acceptance | Measurement method, reference condition and design-defined permissible change |
Material inspected in a warehouse and a component checked after humid exposure do not automatically represent the same state. Resolve the difference by documenting conditions and criteria, not by adjusting a datasheet value to fit one measurement.
Know when a comparison is still open
Missing grade identity, supply condition or acceptance criteria leaves the comparison incomplete. Promising material data may still require application testing; a typical property is not a guaranteed dimensional tolerance. Keep material documentation, dimensional inspection and functional validation separate.
Send the requested material, form, dimensions, quantity and required records through PomDepot’s contact route. If grade selection is still open, explain the application and missing inputs. Review the material-family catalogue and confirm availability, identity and documentation for the actual offer. This guide does not offer part manufacturing, prescribe a treatment cycle or guarantee a finished tolerance.
Frequently asked questions
Are PAI and Torlon complete material specifications?
No. Identify the actual grade, manufacturer and supplied form, together with relevant condition and documentation. A polymer family or brand does not define all of these.
Can a dry-part measurement approve use in every environment?
Acceptance should correspond to agreed application and measurement conditions. Moisture can affect PAI, and a result in one state does not demonstrate stability in every other state.
Does this article provide a post-cure procedure?
It prescribes no times or temperatures. Request the procedure applicable to the exact product from its manufacturer or supplier, with evidence of any required treatment.
